Charlevoix County Sheriff's Office reports they are investigating a deadly car crash in Melrose Township.

The crash happened on Springbrook Road near the Challenge Mountain Adaptive Recreation Facility.

Jacob Clute, 21-year-old, from Petoskey, was driving a truck North on Springbrook Road. Clute lost control of his truck and hit a tree, ending up in a ditch. He was then able to get his car out, and continue on the road.

Shortly after, Clute lost control of his truck a second time. His truck then ended up in a ditch on the Eastside of the street. When his truck fell into the ditch, it overturned to his side, trapping his underneath the truck.

Clute died from his injuries.

Caryssa Rousa of Boyne City was a passenger in the truck during the accident. The 22-year-old was trapped inside the cab on the truck.

A passerby saw the accident and was able to break the window with a log, freeing Rouser. She was treated at the scene.

Neither of the passengers were wearing seatbelts. Police say speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash.

This crash is still under investigation.

"One of the things that I've always kind of held close with is that as long as long as a fugitive is out on the run, making the choice to run, the victim is being essentially victimized continually, there's not really any closure," said Det. Sgt. Kevin Hansz. "It's my job to try and bring that to closure."
