Child Dies After Drowning in Lake Mitchell

Posted: Updated:

A child has died after being found in the water of Cadillac's Lake Mitchell.

Wexford County Central Dispatch received a call just before 5:30 PM on Monday reporting a 1 year-old boy was missing from Quail Court near West Lake Mitchell Drive.

According to the Wexford County Sheriffs Department, the mother was outside with her four kids when she went inside to feed her newborn. Her 11 year-old, 7 year-old and 1 year-old Arend Wagasky were left outside.

All the kids were playing along the sea wall and on the dock when they noticed Arend had disappeared.

Everyone started to look for the toddler, including neighbors. The sheriffs department says a neighbor actually found Arend near the dock and pulled him out of the water.

CPR was performed on the child and then emergency responders arrived on scene. Arend was transported to Mercy Hospital where he died a short time later.

The Wagasky family was visiting their summer home on Lake Mitchell, the family is from Grand Haven.

The sheriffs department recommends anybody, especially young children, who can't swim to wear a life jacket in and around the water.

The incident remains under investigation by the Wexford County Sheriff's Department.
